[Bookplate for Hall by J. T. Ralph] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a crane standing on one foot facing to the left with one claw curled. It is standing on a patch of grass atop a crest wreath. The shield is divided per pale. The left-hand side is further divided with a chief. The smaller top section features sable stripes and is charged with three five point stars each decorated with shading. The bottom section is argent and charged with a sable chevron engrailed. The section is also charged with three black lion heads erased, two over one. The right-hand side also has sable stripes and is charged with Three white flowers, two over one. The bottom flower is larger than the top two flowers. The flowers have very round petals. The center of the flower is an open circle and straight lines extend out to the round petals. Below the shield is a motto printed on a black and white striped banner shaped like a V. The ends of the banner have circular cut outs. Below the motto is a similar, larger ribbon with the name of the bookplate owner printed in large, block font. The last three letters are smaller and in white with black shading. The first latter is printed on a small, white shield in a black striped larger black letter with black shading. At the bottom point of the shield is printed the bookplate’s creator’s name and place in small, black, serif, sentence case font. 22. [Bookplate for J. H. Ainsworth by T. E.] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale. The gules (red) dexter of the shield contains a small crescent at precise middle chief, and three battle axes argent (silver), two over one. The battle axe is an ancient military weapon, and placed on a shield represents a mark of prowess. The argent sinister of the shield contains a gules canton at dexter chief. The canton contains a talbot's head, erased. The sinister side of the shield also contains a chevron, ermines (a fur represented by white spots on a black field). Atop the escutcheon is the helm, grated and in profile. The helm is topped by a straight crest wreath and an armored figure holding a battle axe in his dexter hand. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the latin motto. 23. [Bookplate for J. W. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. The shield features a sinister canton paly. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, gothic font. More text is printed below the name in smaller, black, capitalized, serif font. 24. [Bookplate for James Butler] In black ink on cream or tan paper, the bookplate consists of a decorative border made of daggers and double daggers. The border has rounded corners. The manuscript addition is in brown ink. 25. [Bookplate for James De Carteret] An ornate border surrounds the text. There is a smudged line of ink running diagonally from the centre bottom of the bookplate to the upper edge of the border. 26. [Bookplate for James Maitland Hunt] In black ink, this bookplate contains an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with two dogs courant, and a chief, argent, with fox cabossed, between two hunting horns. Above, a helmet with mantling, and a crest of a lion's head erased, gorged. All set within a floral architectural border. 27. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot by Graham Johnston] This bookplate's design features, in black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged on the fess with three cinque foils within an indented bordure. Above the escutcheon is a tilting helmet, charged with a straight wreath and a dexter hand couped at the wrist, which holds a laurel wreath aloft. Decorative vegetative mantling surrounds the escutcheon within the bounds of a rectangular frame. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name. This bookplate appears to be a smaller version of BP MUR SL P H475b, but the creator's initials are barely visible amongst the mantling. 28. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot by Graham Johnston] This bookplate's design features, in black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged on the fess with three cinque foils within an indented bordure. Above the escutcheon is a tilting helmet, charged with a straight wreath and a dexter hand couped at the wrist, which holds a laurel wreath aloft. Decorative vegetative mantling surrounds the escutcheon within the bounds of a rectangular frame. The bookplate designer's initials and the date of creation are hidden among the mantling. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name. A smaller version of this bookplate may also be viewed at BP MUR SL P H475a. 29. [Bookplate for John Hamilton by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on cream paper. One motto is printed on a ribbon with ends that extend to two points at the top of the bookplate. Motto is printed in capitalized, serif block letters. Below that motto is a crest featuring a leafy tree growing out of a crown. The crown’s points are rounded and leafy. The base of the crown is decorated with horizontal diamonds. The tree trunk grows through a picture frame with a saw attached to the center. The free is growing through this frame/saw object and has extensive, dense foliage. The entire crest sits atop a twisted wreath. The shield has extended points to the top left and right and the bottom curls to a point. The shield is sable and argent, divided per quarterly. The top left and bottom right sections are sable and charged with three white flowers, two over one. The flowers have distinct round centers and five individual, separate petals. The top right and bottom left section are argent and charged with a Viking-style ship with three oars, a flag pointing to the left at the front and rear of the ship, and a tall mast. The sail is rolled up on the mast in a horizontal line. Four lines extend from the sail down to the ship. There is a flag at the top of the mast, with two lines extending down to the sail. Curlicue mantling decorates the shield from the base upwards. A second motto is printed on a ribbon with two pointed ends at the base of the shield. The text is printed in capitalized, serif, black font. The name of the bookplate owner is printed below this motto in thin, sentence case, cursive font. In the bottom right corner the name of the bookplate creator is printed in small, italicized, sentence case black font. 30. [Bookplate for John William Griffin by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on white paper. Perforated edges with round corners surround the bookplate. The bookplate is surrounded by an incomplete border of two black lines that do not connect at the top. There are spaced out diamond shapes on the border with black circular centres. At the top, the border folds into triangles at the left and right corners. Each corner has a square flower with four petals and one leaf with a darker background. The border frames an image with a rounded pointed top. The image shows a desk with a window looking onto a moving steam engine. At the top of the image is a circle with a white border. In the centre on a gray background is a griffin rampant on a crest-wreath. The steam engine is outside the window in the centre of the bookplate with steam pouring out. The window has vertical and horizontal stripes with black circles at the intersections of the stripes. There is a curtain on either side of the window. Nothing sits on the window ledge, but on the desk in front is half of a lamp with a decorative, bell-shaped shade, eight books with different spine designs, an ink pot with a feather quill in it, and a workspace with several papers on it. Below the image is a black rectangle with capitalized white font. At the centre of the top and bottom of the rectangle is a slight downward facing point. Below the bottom point in black ink are the initials of the creator and the year of creation. 31. [Bookplate for L. Emile Grothé by Aimé Dufesne] Black ink on white paper. Border has white outlines, shaded for a three-dimensional effect and is filled in with thin black lines. The top and bottom sides of the border indent in the middle with squared corners. The left and right sides of the border indent in the middle with rounded corners. The top half of the bookplate has diagonal black lines extending wider from the centre. The top left corner features a person wearing a feathered headdress and a sash holding arrows in their left hand and a bow in their right hand. They are standing on a decorative ledge connected to the border and sitting atop of an elaborate curlicue. The right corner has the same curlicue and ledge and a person in a long coat and striped hat holding a pouch stands atop it. Between the two figures is an open book. The bottom of the top half of the bookplate contains half a round map of the world surrounded by a thick border of the same style as the overall bookplate border. The owner’s motto is written across the map’s border in thin, capitalized, sans-serif font. A rectangular border of the same design sits in the centre of the bookplate. The top of the border features large, captitalized, serif block font. The font is white with a black background and white stripes surrounding that background. On either side of that text are half circle decorations in a vertical stack between two thin white borders. The centre of the rectangle within the borders has a grey background with capitalized, sans-serif block font printed on top. The font is black with a white outline and dark shading. Two shields hang below the rectangle on the left and right side. The shield on the left is argent with sable dots per fess. The top third of the crest is charged with two fleurs-des-lis. The central portion of the crest, featuring sable and argent stripes. is charged with a lion passant guardant. The bottom third of the crest is charged with three maple leaves with connected stems. The shield on the right is per pale consisting of sable and argent stripes and argent with sable dots. The left side is charged with two lions passant that are argent with sable dots. The right side is charged with a lion sejant erect and eight hearts, each of which are sable and argent striped. Between the two crests, hanging from the central rectangular feature, is a checkered black rectangle with white borders on the left, right, and bottom sides. White curlicues extend from the left and right sides. Similar curlicues, leafy decoration, and black strip adorned with small circles extend from the bottom of the rectangle. The background of the bottom half of the bookplate not covered with other decorative features has the same black stripes as the top half. In the bottom left and right corners of the bookplate are four books each, spines facing out. Next to the books on the left is a black inkwell with two feather quills in it. Next to the inkwell is a beehive on a wooden platform surrounded by five bees. On the right of the beehive is an oil lamp with a bright flame burning. Outside the bottom border, inside the indent, the bookplate creator’s name and date of creation is printed in thin, black, sentence-case, serif font. 32. [Bookplate for Laurence A. Waldron by Waller] In red ink. This bookplate displays a classical theme. A neoclassical urn, draped with a laurel garland serves as the back-drop for the escutcheon. The escutcheon, argent (silver), is charged with three bull's heads caboshed, situated two over one. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a heraldic tyger sejant. This component is encircled by the originator's Latin motto. The urn is set upon a pedestal with an oval background, framed by a garland. At the base, between the oval background and laurel garland frame, appears the name and location of the creator. 33. [Bookplate for Lieve Van Kerkhove and Martin Jackson] In black ink, this pictorial contemporary bookplate consists of a nude female, seated in a wood boat which is too small relative to her size. The nude's knees are up, her legs spread open, and her feet and buttocks rest on the outer edges of the craft (only her left foot and left buttock are visible). Extending from inside the boat upwards into the air, and held by the nude's right hand, is a larger-than-life fountain pen. The nude's left arm descends behind her raised knee, and emerges from behind the left buttock as a hand holding the stem of a rose ; the hand and rose appearing somewhat disconnected from the rest of the body. Resting between her legs, seen as almost emerging from the pubic region, is a cat with upraised tail and paws which rest on the bow of the boat. Below the cat, on the port side of the boat is an image of a lyre. In the turbulent river which surrounds the boat, one can see additional rose blossoms floating on the surface of the water. In the background, there is an automobile crossing a stone bridge and a large stone church with steeples on the left. One can see a flock of birds flying above the church's western steeple. In the background on the right, one can see the church's cemetery. 34. [Bookplate for Lord Francis Gray by Daniel Lizars and William Home] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), charged with a lion rampant, with an engrailed bordure, argent (silver). The shield is supported by a lion rampant guardant on each site. Above the shield is a crown denoting baron status, and directly above the crown is a crest of an anchor upon a straight wreath. Immediately below the shield is another crest, a swan, also upon a straight wreath. Extending out from the bottom of the shield are two banners, with bookplate test within. The bookplate is bordered by an elaborate leaf design. 35. [Bookplate for Margarethe Schwarzwald and J. E. Horvath] This beautiful bookplate in black ink on thin brown paper presents us with a view of a village and a hill top castle through an opening in the trees. In the foreground is a stack of books, with one book open facing the observer, and a vase filled with flowers. 36. [Bookplate for McIntosh Art Gallery by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on cream paper. White ivy border over stippled black background. Names of John Gordon McIntosh and Wilhelmina Morris McIntosh inscribed on facing pages of book, behind which is a lit torch whose rays span out from the center of the plate. The text of the plate is on a scroll which is woven around a lyre, a symbol of harmony. 37. [Bookplate for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce by Avis Selina Fyshe] The image border, black ink on white paper, depicts the variety of topics of children's literature included in the library: travel, myths, fairy-tales, nature, crafts, sport, pets, legend, music, adventure, history, and science. Each subject is displayed with a representative image, including, train, plane, covered-wagon, trumpeter, knight, dragon, dog, rabbit, sailing boats, people, ostrich, monkey, princess and pegasus. 38. [Bookplate for Paul Hahn by J. M.] Black and blue ink on cream paper. The rectangular border consists of three black lines of decreasing thickness towards the center. In the top right corner is a small butterfly with outspread wings with some decoration. Below the butterfly is text in stylized, capitalized, black serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed below in slightly different stylized font in a larger size. Underneath the owner’s name is a larger butterfly with more elaborate outstretched wings. The text forms a single column in the left-hand side of the bookplate. To the right of the text is a bookshelf that appears to extend down to the bottom of the bookplate. Books are stacked in various ways on the shelf, spines facing out. In front of the bookshelf is a cello. The base of the cello sits in the bottom center of the bookplate and the neck extends up towards the top right-hand corner. At the top of the cello sits a butterfly, less elaborate than the others, that has been coloured in with blue ink. To the right of the cello is a tall object extending up along the bookshelf. A section of papers, potentially sheet music, in a folder in the bottom right corner. In the bottom left corner, the bookplate creator’s initials are printed in capitalized, black, serif font surrounded by a thin black border. 39. [Bookplate for Pretre L. Bertrand] An ornate border of foliage, flowers, ribbons, and musical instruments surrounds the text. Below the printed text is a manuscript note. The back of the bookplate is covered in marbling, presumably lifted from a book when the bookplate was removed. 40. [Bookplate for Robert Smart] An armorial bookplate printed in black ink on white paper. A bird displayed, wings inverted, couped with thistle in beak, with a crest wreath, argent and vert (silver and green). Beneath that is a shield, party per pale, erminois and argent. The dexter side, erminois, per chevron azure (blue) with three chess rooks, gules (red).
